Kira left her home in Copenhagen at the age of 17 to pursue her dream of playing in a rock’n’roll band. For 8 years she journeyed through many foreign lands, which she traveled like a modern-day gypsy. Her path led her through many parts of the world, but for many years her base was in the cities of London and L.A.
Drawing from her experiences from her diverse and sometimes complicated relationships, her life on the road, her continuous musical curiosity, and her many collaborations (most importantly with her husband Nicolai Munch-Hansen), she created a musical world of deeply personal songs, which developed into a style very much her own. With a rough edge and moody tales that tie together her many musical influences, listeners find cinematic soundscapes fused together with acoustic and electric songwriter-based melodic material, shadows of trip-hoppy David Lynch-inspired locations, highway cruisers, stripped-down folk-inspired hymns, and shadows of her love for Billie Holiday… all evident in her song-writing today.
Kira released her debut album HAPPINESS SAVES LIVES in 2002 to great critical acclaim, and the press welcomed her as the greatest natural talent seen in Danish Rock for many years. 12 years on, she has released 11 studio albums, 3 of them being with her first band Kira and the Kindred Spirits, which awarded her a Danish Grammy and the Gaffa Prize as “Vocalist of the Year” in 2006. That year, she also released her side-project THE GOSPEL, co-written and produced by Tore Johansson (Franz Ferdinand, Cardigans est.), which led to her being discovered by the trip-hop legend Tricky in 2007, and signed by his and Chris Blackwell’s short-lived joint label BROWNPUNK. She also joined Tricky’s band as lead vocalist on his world tour in 2008.
Following this, she released two solo albums with her backing band The Ghost Riders, the latter being recorded in Iceland and produced by John Parish. She was awarded the Danish Film Academy’s annual Robert Award for “Song of the Year” in 2009. She then released her tribute album to Billie Holiday in 2011, followed by her collaboration with The former SODS guitarist Peter Peter and their joint project PERSONA, resulting in the album EPIPHANIES OF GRANDEUR in 2012.
In 2013 she released the critically acclaimed WHEN WE WERE GENTLE. The album was again produced John Parish and hailed by the Danish press to be the highlight of her career that far, earning her two Steppeulve prizes, the Danish Critic Associations annual prize as “Album of the Year,” as well as “Vocalist of the Year” and The Carl Nielsen prize as “Lyricist of the Year.” In 2014, she released her duo project with the singer Marie Fisker, THE CABIN PROJECT, recorded in the woods of Canada and produced by Mark Howard (Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Tom Wait etc. ) The album was got an overwhelmingly positive reception by the press in both Denmark and Germany.
In 2015, Kira teamed up with John Parish and Paul Corkett again, this time to record the critically acclaimed MAY YOUR MIND EXPLODE A BLOSSOM TREE in the legendary Rockfield studio in Wales. The first single from the album, I CELEBRATE MY LIFE was released as a remix by the renowned electronic musical artist and DJ, Trentemøller and became one of the most frequently played singles on Danish alternative radionstaion p6 that year. . In 2016, Kira starred in a tribute to country legend Johnny Cash at the Aarhus Theater in a production entitled “American Spirit.”
2017 brought with it the loss of Kira’s husband and closest musical partner, bassist Nicolai Munch-Hansen, who died suddenly before she, together with Maria Faust, released their collaboration IN THE BEGINNING, a project which was recognized with two trophies at the DMA Jazz Awards (“Danish Jazz Composer of the Year” and “Danish Jazz Vocal Release of the Year”) and a Steppeulv (Danish Critics award) prize for Composer(s) of the Year. That autumn, Kira and pianist Nikolaj Hess embarked on a month-long tour of Denmark with their duo project.
Now, in 2018, Kira Skov has released a widely acclaimed tribute album to Nicolai Much-Hansen, entitled THE ECHO OF YOU – SONGS FOR NICOLAI, with John Parish on as producer and special guest Bonnie Prince Billy on vocals. Here, Kira is surrounded by a special circle of friends in her band,as they memorialize and celebrate the departed, and as she adds yet another new chapter to her unique artistic universe.
The album won a Danish Grammy as “Vocal release of the year” and “Lilac sky”her duet with Bonnie Prince Billy was nominated as “Song of the year” by Steppeulven.
